how to tell manager I want to relocate back

hello everyone!!

I am facing a dilemma. So, I started a new job back in Sept ‘25. They made me relocate from my home state of MN (specifically Minneapolis) to Iowa, and gave me a relocation bonus (like 1.5k). Since moving here, I’ve been at the company for almost a year. At first it felt exciting to be in a different area with new people, but I slowly started to hate it. The city is just not for me, the people are very friendly though. My mental and physical health started declining, and with personal stuff happening, I feel I really need to move back and be remote, or even try a different branch that’s in a bigger city (like Denver or SF) where there’s more to do. The problem is, the company I work for is kind of strict of return to office, most of my team is in Iowa except my manager, and there’s no office in MN, so is it smart for me to still ask? Has this happened to anyone?
