How do you account for towels after checkout?

First, I’ve never stolen towels so that’s not what this is about. But I’ve left room towels at the pool. I’ve set room towels in the hall. I’ve taken extra towels off the cart 😁. I just often wonder how the hotel/resort squares all that up because I’m sure people do steal towels and washcloths.
