Arrived at Nightmare Frontier (?) and still zero clue about what is going on

Update:

Got through the Forbidden Forest, one-shotted the 3 Hunters.

Got to Bwrgenbeh (spelling?), killed stuff there, opened the door to the guy sitting on the chair. He wouldn't talk to me but pointed to the lake. Jumped, met Rom, killed her at my third attempt.

Went back, dude Still would not talk to me.

Went fowards to the (so far) worst area of the game: the unseen Village.

Got ganked so many times, or stuck on the stairs and then ganked again.

Horrible perma-rez mobs. I hear a bell but most of the time I don't see a bell bearing mob.

Had to come back to yarghan (spelling) to farm vials - what a lousy idea of a system of healing. Totally taints the experience.

Went back to Unseen Village, tried to kill the 3 mobs inside the Cathedral - killed one but the two black robbed others are absolutely insane, tougher than any bosses so far.

Had to go back and farm a few more vials again. Bah.

Decided to ignore them for now, explored the rest of the map, reached the Reborn creature boss at 4th attempt. That was harder than the others bosses with all the fireballs and shouts and stuff falling from the sky. The run back was really disheartening, why not a lamp closer to the boss? Luckily I only needed 4 attempts.

Went to mansion that has the lecture hall, explored and a door sent me to nightmare. Explored a lot, got killed after and hour ir exploration by a stupid mob that gave me the death blight thingy instead of the poison that the area was giving me.

The run back is going to be frustrating.

Stopped for the evening.

Still don't understand what is going on. I read everything and tried talking to every NPC I could find, even found the old workshop in yarghan.

Yeah, someone injected me with some Blood (why?), I started killing beasts (why?) killed a lot of people in my way, went to a rather small and primitive school a dude wouldn't talk to me but I killed some weird Spider (why) and then some Cthulhus became visible in the city (why?), no idea what they are, do, exist or objectives, just that they are some Cthulhus.

Mobs kept being ressurrected by the Bell girls(why? How?), killed a Reborn (of what? Of whom? What beef do I have with it?), went into a lecture hall Somehow, whilst exploring opened a door very much like others but sent me to two nightmares

I don't understand what is going on, nor why not how.

No idea about my purpose or goal in all of that.🤷‍♂️

Without context or explanation, everything feels shallow and meaningless.

Really struggling to see how this rather mediocre game has such a good reputation. At least so far.

I am trying and I keep pushing it but it seems the game doesn't want to be good nor become good

For randomly killing mobs, FPS are better (hello Doom Eternal). For the mood and vibe, other games are equally good (The Secret World, The Last of US part1), as souls-likes there are a lot better even from other companies other that Fromsoftware.

What makes this one more than an ok game?

I think even Dark Souls 3 didn't feel so story-light, random and directionless

At this point, will the game improve or it's more of the same?

Because the game started with great potencial but it has been disapointing the more I play and feels needlessly obscure and obtuse just for the sake of being só rather than good reasons.

Honestly, on your first playthrough, blind, did you really have a different experience than mine?

Watching a YT video shouldn't count as "good story", same as a book that needs a second book to explain it is never ever a good book.

Did I miss a special @rea that explains or at least gives some purpose or context to otherwise gibberish words?
