What presents to give your husband's mom and dad if you just got married?

My friend just got married two weeks ago; she loves preparing presents for families and friends, handmade or bought. Recently, her new mother-in-law had a small operation and she's struggling with what to give the old lady as a best-wishes gift that is not too shabby, nor too pressuring for the recipient.

It cannot be something to eat or drink, not flowers or cards, nothing too expensive bc they just became a family...

Her husband is not a very sensitive person (oh man). I didn't really prepare presents growing up bc I grew up poor...so I'm here to collect some wisdom! Thank you!
