Feeling stuck in my role. How do I approach this to my boss?
I'm an IT Project Coordinator and have been in the role for about 2 years. Pretty small company, we have like 15 corporate folks and the rest are contractors. I originally joined my company as a contractor and was later converted to a corporate employee.
When I started, my role was more about helping organize IT operations and supporting various departments with different projects and tasks. Over time though my responsibilities have evolved quite a bit. I assist with audits, compliance efforts, policy development, SOPs, ticket management, and have essentially become the person managing a lot of our IT infrastructure. I'm involved in meetings throughout the week, but since we're a smaller company, there are also days where I'm waiting for tickets to come in or reviewing current documentation in the repository I maintain (like looking for any policies to update, or create)
The thing is, I've realized that I don't really want to stay on the IT operations side anymore. I'm much more interested in growing into a Business Analyst, documentation, process improvement, or compliance-focused role. One thing I know for sure is that I do not want to become a Project Manager.
Earlier this year, I talked to my boss about wanting to move in that direction. She was very supportive and said she was glad I brought it up. Since then, she's included me in more proposal discussions, QPRs, and even management meetings. But not really had time to even assist in proposals because it’s been chaotic for them and proposals after proposals so no time to even train me.
My challenge is that the company relies heavily on me for IT operations. My boss especially depends on me for maintaining our IT infrastructure and handling anything that requires an onsite presence. Our ISSO is remote and is primarily focused on managing a contract as a PM, so most of his involvement is limited to approvals and occasional guidance if I’m stuck on an IT issue.
Honestly, I'm burned out on IT and want to grow into something different. I'd also like to increase my earning potential. Performance review season is coming up, and I'm wondering if this is the right time to have another conversation with my boss.
Would it be reasonable to ask for a title change and salary increase based on the responsibilities I've already taken on, while also discussing a transition path into a BA/documentation/compliance-focused role? How would you approach that conversation without sounding ungrateful, especially when my boss has been supportive and seems invested in helping me grow?
