I think AI has made being a developer a better profession.
The impact of AI on the software development industry is impossible to ignore, but I believe that, overall, this disruption is a positive thing.
AI is going to reshape the developer job market and weed out a lot of people who think of themselves as developers—people I’d call “API boys,” including many of those so-called full-stack developers.
For quite some time, the software development industry has been seriously oversaturated. A lot of people are essentially doing repetitive work that requires very little technical depth. Their skill level in the third year of their career is often barely different from what it is in their tenth year.
AI will eliminate much of this repetitive work and allow us to focus on solving genuinely interesting problems. At the same time, it will make people with real expertise in technical areas—such as rendering, compilers, operating systems, browser engines, and machine learning—even more valuable, and I believe it will ultimately create more opportunities in those fields.
