Why are most nail techs Asian?
Why is that one very specific industry saturated with people of Asian descent? I've lived in several cities in several states and it's the same.
I'm not complaining. For the most part. I'm just curious. The issue I have is it's very difficult to communicate no matter where I go. And yes, I do feel it's rude to be sitting in a salon while being talked around in another language.
I've tried being polite and making small talk but the technicians don't seem interested.
Today I went for a pedicure and tried to explain that my big toe is broken so I needed the technician to be extra gentle there. Her response was "I know". And that was worrisome because there was no indication that it was broken and responding with I know wasn't an appropriate response. So I stopped her and tried to get someone else to help explain. No one gave any indication that they understood what I was saying or relaying the information to the woman who was going to do my pedicure.
So I left. Which I felt honestly, really bad for doing, but I didn't want to take the chance. This is not an isolated incident of being unable to communicate my needs effectively and feeling like I'm being understood.
Can anyone explain this to me?
