Client renewal season is coming. Is your reporting actually defending the retainer?

Most agencies we talk to treat the quarterly report as just a bigger version of their monthly report, three months of the same slides stapled together with a longer date range in the header. Then renewal season arrives and the report doesn't actually do the one job it needed to do.

But very few agencies build their client’s quarterly review as a genuinely separate document. It leads with a goal-versus-actual comparison against whatever targets were set at the start of the quarter, includes an honest section on what didn't work and why the strategy changed mid-quarter, and ends with specific recommendations and targets for the next quarter.

The logic is simple: a single month of data is noisy enough to argue either way, but three months of the same trend is a lot harder to dismiss in a renewal conversation.

What's not clear to us is how consistently agencies actually do this versus how many are still sending a heavier monthly report every three months and calling it quarterly.

How does everyone else handle this? Do you build something structurally different for the quarterly/renewal conversation?
