Does anyone have any tips for shading?

I really enjoy drawing and often recreate comic panels. I’m very good at drawing when I have a reference, but whenever I try to draw characters myself, I can’t ever get the shading right. I have no clue what direction to shade in, where shadows lie naturally on bodies, or even really HOW to shade. Any tips? Thanks for the help!
