A genuine concern about IIITA, especially for students considering joining next year
I have spent a significant amount of time at IIIT Allahabad, and I have thought about whether I should even write this. I don’t want this to come across as a hate post or as someone trying to bring the college down.
But I also think prospective students deserve to hear about the experience from people who have actually spent a considerable amount of time here.
There are many genuinely good things about IIITA. The students are talented, the peer group is strong, and the college has built a reputation for academics and placements over the years. I have personally met some amazing people here and had experiences that I will always value.
At the same time, there are some things that have been difficult to ignore.
Food and food safety have been recurring concerns. There have been instances of students falling sick after meals, and the quality of food can be frustratingly inconsistent.
Hostel facilities and basic infrastructure are another concern. Power supply, maintenance and general living conditions can sometimes make hostel life unnecessarily difficult. And to be clear, this isn’t a reaction to the power situation of yesterday. These have been recurring concerns that students have discussed for a long time.
Then there is the placement process.
Placements are obviously one of IIITA’s biggest strengths and one of the main reasons students consider coming here. But the process itself can sometimes be surrounded by uncertainty, disagreements and internal politics. When something has such a huge impact on students’ careers, you naturally wish the process felt more transparent, stable and student-friendly.
Something else has bothered me for quite a while.
Spend some time looking through the student communities of different colleges. You’ll obviously find complaints everywhere. No college is perfect.
But compare that with the IIITA subreddit.
It is hard not to notice how frequently the discussion here revolves around problems with the college, hostels, food, administration, placements or infrastructure.
That doesn’t mean every post is negative, nor does it mean IIITA is uniquely bad. But when a college community repeatedly ends up having the same conversations, I think it is worth asking why.
What makes me particularly sad is seeing students who have just arrived having to deal with some of these things.
These students worked incredibly hard to get here. They probably arrived with a lot of excitement and expectations about what their college life would be like.
I genuinely hope their experience turns out to be better than what many seniors have experienced.
And if you’re a student from another college reading this, please don’t take this as me saying that IIITA has nothing good to offer. It does.
I’m simply saying that the placement numbers and reputation are not the entire picture.
If you’re someone planning to join IIITA next year, please talk to current students before making your decision. Ask them about hostel life. Ask about food. Ask about infrastructure and electricity. Ask about placements. Ask how student complaints are handled.
Then make your own decision.
For me personally, after spending a significant amount of my life here, I have reached a point where I honestly don’t think I would make the same choice again if I were making the decision today.
That is difficult for me to say because these years have also given me some wonderful friends, memories and experiences.
But those years are also a significant part of my life that I can never get back.
I really hope IIITA improves. Not just for current students, but for the juniors who have just arrived and the students who are considering coming here next year.
They deserve to have the good parts of IIITA without having to accept its problems as simply “part of college life.”
