Summer in the Countryside: "Winter" (Inaka no Natsu: "Fuyu") | S1E12: “The First Frost”

TITLE: 田舎の夏:「冬」 (INAKA NO NATSU: "FUYU") (SUMMER IN THE COUNTRYSIDE: "WINTER")

EPISODE: 1 - "THE FIRST FROST"

[AUDIO CUE] The episode does not open with the blaring, frantic cicadas of Season 1. Instead, there is only the incredibly soft, muffled hush of falling snow. A slow, melancholic, but deeply warm lo-fi piano melody begins to play, accompanied by the gentle crackle of a kerosene space heater.

INT. SUGUWARA GRANDPARENTS' HOUSE - KOTARO'S BEDROOM - MORNING

[MONTAGE - SHINKAI-STYLE WINTER MORNING]

 * The windowpane is framed in delicate, sprawling crystalline frost. Outside, the world is buried in a pristine, blindingly white blanket of snow.

 * A heavy, thick futon on the tatami mat.

 * Kotaro exhales, his breath forming a tiny, distinct cloud of white vapor in the freezing air of his bedroom.

Kotaro opens his eyes. He doesn't bolt upright. He doesn't blindly reach for his phone to check his daily metrics or upload volumes.

He just watches his breath curl in the cold air, listening to the absolute silence of the snow outside.

He shivers, pulling the heavy quilt tighter around his shoulders. He finally sits up, abandoning the pristine white button-downs of his Tokyo days. Instead, he pulls on a thick, dark gray woolen turtleneck and a pair of heavy fleece-lined trousers.

INT. SUGUWARA GRANDPARENTS' HOUSE - KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Kotaro slides the paper door open and steps into the living space. The temperature difference is immediate. The room is radiating with the deep, localized heat of a humming kerosene heater and the massive kotatsu dominating the center of the room.

Grandpa Genzo is sitting at the table, wearing a thick padded hanten (winter coat) over his clothes, reading the local newspaper with his reading glasses perched on the end of his nose.

Grandma Chiyo is at the stove. The rich, savory, comforting smell of steaming miso soup and grilled mackerel fills the air.

CHIYO

(Turning with a warm smile, holding a wooden ladle)

Good morning, Kotaro. Did the cold wake you? The forecast said it dropped below freezing last night.

KOTARO

(Walking over to the kotatsu, immediately sliding his legs under the heavy blanket)

Good morning, Grandma. Good morning, Grandpa. The temperature drop was... significant. But the thermal insulation of the futon held up.

GENZO

(Without looking up from his paper, grunting)

You're surviving, City Boy. Though if you want to keep all your toes this winter, you need to buy thicker socks. The ones you brought from Tokyo are paper.

Kotaro smiles faintly. He accepts a steaming ceramic bowl of rice and a bowl of miso soup from Chiyo. He wraps his cold hands around the hot porcelain, soaking in the warmth.

He glances at his wallet sitting on the counter. It is notably thin. He does the math in his head—he needs exactly three more shifts at the Miyazaki farm to afford the cedar bento box and the thermos for Aoi.

Before he can take his first bite of rice, a series of loud, muffled THUMPS echo from the front porch, followed by the sound of boots being aggressively kicked against the wooden step to dislodge snow.

AOI (O.S.)

(Muffled through the front door)

Excuse the intrusion! It is officially a tundra out here!

GENZO

(Yelling toward the entryway, not even blinking)

It’s unlocked, girl! Don't let the draft in!

The heavy front door slides open. A gust of freezing, icy wind sweeps into the hallway before the door is quickly slammed shut.

Aoi bounds into the living room.

[VISUAL SHIFT]

She is a vision of absolute winter chaos. She is wearing an oversized, puffy navy blue coat, a thick red knit scarf wrapped three times around her neck, and a pair of bright yellow earmuffs. Her short brown hair is dusted with melting snowflakes, and her nose and cheeks are flushed bright cherry-red from the cold.

Kotaro looks at her, and the gentle lo-fi piano track skips a beat, swelling with a sudden, warm major chord. Even after all these months, his heart still does a tiny, involuntary flip when she walks into a room.

AOI

(Unwinding her scarf, breathing heavily)

Good morning, Genzo-jiisan, Chiyo-baasan!

(She looks directly at Kotaro, beaming)

Morning, City Boy. Did you freeze solid in your room?

KOTARO

(Smiling, shifting over to make room for her at the kotatsu)

My vital signs are stable. You have snow in your hair.

Aoi laughs, kicking off her boots and immediately diving under the kotatsu right next to Kotaro. Their knees bump together under the heavy blanket. It’s a completely natural, casual intimacy that they didn't have in Season 1.

Chiyo immediately sets a fourth place setting at the table, sliding a steaming bowl of miso soup in front of Aoi.

AOI

(Bowing her head)

Thank you for the food!

(She takes a sip of the soup and lets out a dramatic, happy sigh)

Chiyo-san, your soup is the only thing keeping me alive. The heater on the local bus is broken again.

GENZO

(Flipping a page of his newspaper)

City hall won't approve the budget to fix that rust bucket until April. You kids are going to have to layer up.

Aoi leans her shoulder comfortably against Kotaro’s arm, holding her hot soup bowl.

AOI

Speaking of layering up, my dad said you asked to take the afternoon shift at the greenhouse today, Kotaro. You know the vinyl tunnels don't hold any heat right now, right? It's going to be miserable.

Kotaro’s posture stiffens just a fraction. He takes a very careful bite of his grilled fish, avoiding her eyes so he doesn't give away the Christmas surprise.

KOTARO

(Keeping his voice level)

I am aware of the ambient temperature, Aoi. However, Hayato-san offered time-and-a-half for the weekend harvest. It is a highly efficient allocation of my afternoon hours.

AOI

(Squinting at him playfully)

"Highly efficient allocation?" You only use the data-speak when you're nervous or hiding something. What are you saving up for? Did Tanaka talk you into buying expensive camera gear for the vlog?

KOTARO

(Ears turning slightly red)

Tanaka's vlog is a financial black hole. I am merely... building an emergency fund. For winter necessities.

Genzo peeks over his newspaper. He catches Kotaro’s eye and gives him a singular, knowing smirk before hiding behind the paper again. Grandpa Genzo definitely knows about the gift plan.

Aoi hums skeptically, but she doesn't press it. Instead, she reaches over with her chopsticks and casually steals a piece of tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) directly from Kotaro’s plate.

AOI

(Chewing happily)

Well, whatever it is, don't freeze to death before finals week. We have to meet Daiki and the others at the school early today. We have a new transfer student arriving, and our homeroom teacher volunteered the club to give her the campus tour.

Kotaro looks up, his analytical brain immediately catching the anomaly.

KOTARO

A transfer student? In the middle of the winter semester? That is highly irregular.

AOI

(Shrugging)

I know, right? Who transfers to Shizukawa in January? Rina says it's an omen.

[AUDIO CUE] A sharp, slightly tense, plucking shamisen string cuts through the warm piano track, hinting at the arrival of the Kyoto storm.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[AUDIO CUE] The warm, cozy piano track fades into the hollow, echoing sound of the school's heating vents struggling to push warm air. A sharp, rhythmic ticking begins—the sound of a high-end analog watch ticking perfectly on time.

INT. SHIZUKAWA HIGH SCHOOL - ENTRANCE HALL - MORNING

[MONTAGE - SHINKAI-STYLE WINTER SCHOOL]

 * The rows of wooden shoe lockers, scuffed and worn, filled with heavy winter boots instead of standard indoor shoes.

 * Frost creeping up the corners of the large glass doors overlooking the snow-covered athletic field.

 * Daiki shivering violently in his standard uniform, holding his phone on a gimbal.

DAIKI

(Teeth chattering)

Vlog fam, the school’s boiler is operating at ten percent capacity. If I succumb to the elements in third period, tell my subscribers I died for the algorithm.

Rina is standing next to him, wearing an incredibly thick, dark wool scarf that covers the lower half of her face.

RINA

(Voice muffled by the scarf)

Your dramatic expiration would yield excellent localized ghost lore, Tanaka. Please proceed.

Kotaro and Aoi walk up to the lockers, swapping their heavy snow boots for their indoor shoes. Aoi immediately gravitates toward the lone, struggling space heater in the corner of the hall.

Kenji is leaning against the wall, entirely unbothered by the cold, calmly drinking a hot can of black tea from the vending machine.

HOMEROOM TEACHER (O.S.)

Ah! Local Revitalization Club! Perfect timing!

The club turns. Their homeroom teacher is walking down the hall, looking slightly frantic, leading a girl who looks like she just stepped out of a high-end Kyoto prep academy brochure.

[VISUAL SHIFT]

The camera focuses sharply on AKIHARA YUMI. She is wearing a pristine, perfectly tailored navy winter coat over her uniform. Her dark hair is cut in a sharp, flawless bob. Her posture is military-straight.

In her hands, gripped so tightly her knuckles are white, is a thick, expensive-looking leather planner.

TEACHER

Everyone, this is Akihara Yumi. She just transferred in from Kyoto. Since you five know the campus best, I’m officially tasking the Revitalization Club with her orientation tour before homeroom.

The teacher claps his hands once and jogs away down the hall, leaving the club staring at the newcomer.

Yumi looks at the five of them. She looks at Daiki’s vlogging camera. She looks at Aoi hugging the space heater. She looks at Kotaro’s slightly worn winter sweater.

Her eyes dart toward the scuffed linoleum floor, then up to the analog clock on the wall.

[AUDIO CUE] A tense, fast-paced string pluck begins. It’s the exact same anxious musical cue that used to play when Kotaro looked at his spreadsheets in Season 1.

YUMI

(Bowing perfectly, her voice a pitch-perfect, painfully polite standard Japanese)

It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I apologize for the unexpected burden on your schedule. Could we commence the tour immediately? I have allocated exactly fourteen minutes before the first bell, and I wish to map the optimal route to the digital library archives.

Daiki lowers his camera.

DAIKI

Digital library archives?

AOI

(Laughing warmly, stepping away from the heater)

Nice to meet you, Akihara-san! I’m Miyazaki Aoi. We don't really have a digital archive here. Or... well, a librarian right now. Mr. Sato retired in October. We mostly just use the honor system for the paperbacks.

Yumi freezes. The polite smile remains plastered on her face, but her right eye twitches imperceptibly.

YUMI

(Voice tight)

The... honor system?

She opens her heavy leather planner. The pages are violently color-coded. She pulls a silver pen from her pocket and furiously scribbles something out.

YUMI (CONT'D)

(Muttering entirely under her breath, the polite standard Japanese slipping into a rapid, panicked Kyoto dialect/Kansai-ben)

Akan... Konna n ja keikaku ga marutsubure ya... (This is bad... My entire schedule is completely ruined...)

(Taking a sharp breath, reverting to standard Japanese)

Then I must immediately locate the public transit schedule for the municipal library.

KENJI

(Taking a slow sip of his canned tea)

The municipal bus only runs twice a day. Morning and dusk.

Yumi’s pen stops moving. She stares at the massive, stoic boy.

[CLOSE UP - YUMI]

The camera pushes in tight on her face. Her breathing becomes shallow. The overwhelming, terrifying realization that she is completely out of her element crashes over her. She is losing control of her variables.

Kotaro watches her.

He doesn't laugh like Daiki. He doesn't look confused like Aoi.

He feels a sudden, profound wave of empathy. He sees the rigid posture, the white-knuckle grip on the planner, and the desperate need to control the environment. He is looking into a mirror.

Kotaro steps forward, placing himself gently between Yumi and the rest of the club's chaotic energy.

KOTARO

(His voice calm, utilizing a very specific, grounded tone)

Akihara-san.

Yumi’s head snaps toward him, her eyes wide with mounting panic.

KOTARO (CONT'D)

(Dropping back into a mild version of his old data-speak, but using it as a shield for her, not himself)

The municipal transit system is currently operating on a limited winter timetable. However, the lack of digital archiving is mitigated by a high volume of uncatalogued collegiate prep materials in the third-floor annex.

Yumi blinks. She stares at Kotaro, genuinely shocked to hear the sterile, comforting language of academic efficiency in this freezing rural hallway.

YUMI

(Voice shaking slightly)

Uncatalogued? Are the prep materials sorted by subject or percentile relevance?

KOTARO

(Smiling gently)

Neither. But I have mapped the entire annex myself. I can provide you with the coordinates for the advanced calculus and literature sections. It will optimize your study time until the municipal bus resumes its spring schedule.

The tense, anxious string music abruptly stops.

Yumi exhales a breath she had clearly been holding since she stepped off the train. Her shoulders drop a fraction of an inch. Her grip on the leather planner loosens.

YUMI

(Looking at Kotaro with profound relief)

You... you mapped it?

KOTARO

I did. My name is Suguwara Kotaro. Welcome to Shizukawa.

Daiki leans over to Aoi, whispering loudly.

DAIKI

Did the City Boy just reboot? Why is he speaking spreadsheet again?

AOI

(Watching Kotaro, a massive, incredibly fond smile spreading across her face)

He’s not rebooting. He's translating.

Aoi realizes exactly what Kotaro is doing. He isn't reverting to his old anxiety; he is using his past to throw a life preserver to someone who is drowning in the same way he did.

Kenji calmly steps forward. He reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a hot, unopened can of green tea he bought from the vending machine. He holds it out toward Yumi.

He doesn't say a word. He just holds the warm metal out to her freezing, trembling hands.

Yumi looks at the massive, intimidating boy, then down at the hot tea. Slowly, she reaches out and takes it. The warmth immediately seeps into her palms.

YUMI

(Blushing slightly, her voice dropping its harsh edge)

...Thank you.

KENJI

(Nodding once)

It's cold today.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[AUDIO CUE] The crunch of six pairs of heavy winter boots stepping in unison on freshly packed snow. A slow, rhythmic, acoustic guitar melody plays, carrying a slightly melancholy but peaceful winter tone.

EXT. SHIZUKAWA MOUNTAIN ROAD - LATE AFTERNOON

[MONTAGE - SHINKAI-STYLE WINTER DUSK]

 * The sun is beginning to set, casting long, sharp, violet shadows across the pristine white snowbanks.

 * The bare, black branches of the cedar trees are heavy with snow, contrasting sharply against a pale, bruised-peach sky.

 * The six members of the Local Revitalization Club are walking in a loose cluster down the winding dirt road, their breaths forming synchronized white plumes in the freezing air.

Daiki is walking backward, pointing his camera at the group.

DAIKI

(Sniffling loudly)

Day one of the Kyoto Anomaly. The temperature has plummeted, but the club morale remains... questionable. Rina-san, any closing thoughts for the vlog?

RINA

(Staring blankly into the lens from behind her thick scarf)

Do not stray from the mountain path, Tanaka. The Yuki-onna (Snow Woman) prefers prey that holds expensive electronic devices.

Daiki yelps, nearly dropping the gimbal, and quickly turns around to walk normally.

Yumi is walking slightly apart from the group. She is shivering, her perfectly tailored Kyoto coat clearly not designed for the biting wind of the Shizukawa valley. Kenji is walking silently a few paces to her left, his massive frame effectively acting as a permanent windbreak, though Yumi is too preoccupied to notice.

Up ahead, Kotaro and Aoi are walking close together.

AOI

(Bumping her shoulder against his)

You’re seriously going straight to the farm? It’s going to be pitch black in an hour, City Boy. You won't even be able to feel your fingers.

KOTARO

(Adjusting his thick wool collar)

Hayato-san secured portable halogen heaters for the vinyl tunnels. And the frost warning means the root vegetables need to be pulled immediately.

(He looks at her, his voice softening)

I won't be out there too late. I promise.

Yumi’s ears perk up. The mention of schedules, labor, and time allocation immediately triggers her Kyoto programming. She steps forward, her pristine leather boots crunching loudly in the snow.

YUMI

(Frowning, her polite tone laced with genuine confusion)

Pardon the interruption, Suguwara-kun. Are you stating that you intend to perform manual agricultural labor this evening?

Kotaro stops walking. He turns to look at her.

KOTARO

Yes, Akihara-san. I work part-time at the Miyazaki family farm.

Yumi stares at him as if he just announced he was going to walk to the moon. She immediately reaches into her coat pocket, pulling out her leather planner and a silver pen.

YUMI

(Voice slipping into a rapid, clinical cadence)

Assuming standard provincial agricultural wages, even accounting for a time-and-a-half holiday multiplier, the financial yield is mathematically insignificant. We are two weeks away from winter finals. The hours you are allocating to pulling root vegetables will result in a catastrophic drop in your study retention.

She taps the silver pen against her planner, her right eye twitching slightly.

YUMI (CONT'D)

It is a gross inefficiency. The return on investment is entirely negative. Why would you deliberately sabotage your academic trajectory for manual labor?

[CLOSE UP - KOTARO]

The camera focuses on Kotaro’s face. He remembers standing in the summer heat, terrified of this exact logic. He remembers his father standing on this very road, telling him his metrics had flatlined.

Old Kotaro would have panicked, dropped his bag, and run home to study.

New Kotaro looks at Yumi’s tightly gripped planner, and then he looks at Aoi, who is watching him with a quiet, incredibly proud smile.

KOTARO

(His voice is entirely calm, warm, and unshakable)

You're right, Akihara-san. The financial yield is small. And it is entirely inefficient.

Yumi blinks, her pen freezing in mid-air. She expected an argument. She expected data.

KOTARO (CONT'D)

But the return on investment isn't negative.

(He smiles—a genuine, peaceful expression that completely defies all of her Kyoto logic)

Some investments aren't meant to go on a spreadsheet.

[AUDIO CUE] The melancholy guitar track swells into a breathtaking, hopeful major chord. The wind kicks up, sending a flurry of sparkling, diamond-like snow drifting across the road between them.

Yumi is completely stunned. Her mouth opens slightly, but no words come out. The rigid framework she uses to survive the world has just been effortlessly dismantled by the smartest boy in the room.

Kotaro gives her a polite, respectful nod. He turns to Aoi.

KOTARO

(Softly, brushing a stray snowflake from Aoi's red scarf)

I’ll see you tomorrow. Tell Chiyo-san I'll be late for dinner.

AOI

(Beaming at him)

Don't freeze, City Boy.

Kotaro turns down the fork in the road, his boots crunching steadily in the snow as he heads alone toward the darkening, freezing fields of the Miyazaki farm.

EXT. MIYAZAKI FAMILY FARM - GREENHOUSE - NIGHT

[MONTAGE - SHINKAI-STYLE WINTER LABOR]

 * Pitch black outside. The vinyl tunnel of the greenhouse glows from the inside with a harsh, warm orange halogen light against the snow.

 * Kotaro's breath plumes in the freezing air inside the tunnel. He is wearing heavy rubber gloves, his hands coated in dark, freezing dirt.

 * He pulls a massive, stubborn daikon radish from the earth, falling backward slightly with the effort.

He sits in the dirt, exhausted, his muscles aching from the cold.

He takes off one heavy rubber glove and reaches into his inner coat pocket. He pulls out a small, crumpled piece of paper. It is a printout of the cedar bento box and the high-end thermos.

He looks at the picture. He looks at his freezing, dirt-stained hands.

A massive, triumphant smile spreads across his face. He carefully tucks the paper back next to his heart, puts the heavy glove back on, and turns back to the frozen earth.

[WIDE SHOT]

The camera pulls out from the glowing orange greenhouse, rising high above the completely silent, snow-buried Shizukawa valley, the stars beginning to pierce through the winter sky.

FADE TO BLACK.

[END OF EPISODE 1]

Author's Note:

Welcome back to Emerald Studios! The 14-day hiatus is officially over, and winter has arrived in Shizukawa for Season 2! Thank you all so much for your patience between seasons. We are shifting gears from the sweltering summer heat to a freezing mountain winter, but the absolute chaos of this friend group hasn't changed a bit.

As you can see from the title, we are entering the Inaka no Natsu: "Fuyu" (Winter) arc. The temperature is dropping, the cicadas are gone, and the mountain is covered in snow. Grab a cup of hot cocoa (preferably in a high-quality thermal flask) and settle in. Let me know what you think in the comments.
