Did attraction and friendship with your spouse grow after marriage?
I’m curious to hear from people who married someone they already loved but weren’t initially very attracted to.
I’ve been with my boyfriend for 4 years, and I genuinely love him. He’s a wonderful man: thoughtful, patient, stable, hardworking, and always trying to make me happy.
But I’ve never felt particularly physically attracted to him.
And I want to clarify: it’s not that I’m just generally “meh” about men or physical affection. I absolutely see men that I find very physically attractive. I know what it feels like to look at someone and think, “Wow, he is fine.” I just don’t experience that feeling with my boyfriend.
We’re celibate and waiting until marriage, so I’m not talking about sexual compatibility specifically. I mean basic physical affection. Sometimes I have to make myself kiss him. I mostly kiss his cheeks now. His hugs don’t particularly excite me. I notice and critique little things about how he kisses, hugs, dresses, talks, etc.
And honestly, I critique A LOT.
There’s another part that bothers me too: he isn’t really my friend. I love him and enjoy spending time with him, but our conversations take work. We don’t have that effortless friendship where you can talk for hours, have the same stupid sense of humor, or genuinely feel like you’re hanging out with your favorite person. I’ve started wondering how important that actually is in a marriage.
We’ve always chalked a lot of my irritability and criticism up to my generalized anxiety disorder. I know I can be extremely irritable and hypercritical about small things, and I’ve spent a lot of time trying to work on that part of myself.
But lately I’ve started wondering… What if it isn’t all my anxiety? What if some of this is simply me not being very attracted to or naturally compatible with him?
At the same time, I LOVE this man. This isn’t a situation where I don’t care about him or feel emotionally connected to him. He’s someone I can genuinely imagine building a peaceful life with.
So for people who have been married for a while:
If you weren’t particularly attracted to your partner before marriage, did that attraction grow once you were married? And if you weren’t naturally best friends before marriage, did that friendship develop with time?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who had a similar experience of loving their partner deeply while still feeling somewhat critical, physically “meh,” or like the friendship didn’t come naturally.
I’m trying to figure out whether these are normal things that can deepen with time and intimacy, or whether I’m trying to explain away something important because the person is otherwise so good.
