Dopamine, addiction, OCD, and compulsive behaviors—has anyone managed to naturally bring balance back to their brain?
I have been struggling for some time with OCD behaviors and thoughts related to checking, fixing, mentally reviewing, becoming obsessed with situations and then trying to find the “right” answer or safe thing to do, etc. Most of my worst symptoms are ROCD related and sometimes interplay with feeling codependent or “addicted to relationships” in a compulsive way.
My therapist gave me a book that talks about how a lot of addictive patterns and compulsive behaviors ultimately stem from the ways dopamine rewires the brain, and I feel like maybe the next step for me after learning about this is to do some kind of work to balance my dopamine levels or create a “sustainable” way of getting it for my brain health, so I can ultimately stop resorting to checking, compulsively fixing, and other “addictive” behaviors.
Has anyone else gone down this dopamine regulation path in an attempt to help regain control over their life and sanity? What tools did you use or what worked for you to balance your brain and feel rewarded, fulfilled, and safe beyond addictive and compulsive patterns?
