AIO? 37F, autistic, and confused by the expectations in a 10-day-old neighborhood friendship

TL;DR: Met a neighbor at the pub 10 days ago. She talked a lot about being lonely and struggling to make friends. Since then, she invited me out once and I declined. I invited her out a few days later and she declined. Less than two days later, she questioned whether I even wanted to be friends. I was confused and sent a firm boundary text. Did I overreact?

I (37F) randomly met her (42F) at our neighborhood pub 10 days ago. We talked for about two hours, got along and exchanged numbers. I’m autistic and she has ADHD, which came up naturally while we were talking.

She was pretty open about being lonely, struggling to make friends and feeling lonely in her marriage. I enjoyed talking to her and was happy to have a new neighborhood friend.

A few days later she invited me out. I was tired and not feeling well, so I declined. Once I felt better, I invited her out. She was exhausted and declined.

That was it. I genuinely thought everything was fine.

Less than two days later, last night, she suddenly questioned whether I actually wanted to hang out or be friends.

That’s where I got confused. The last thing I had done was invite her out. Neither of us had rejected the friendship. Two invitations simply didn’t work out.

She also brought up not being good over text, but we have literally only texted about making plans. I wasn’t expecting a texting friendship in the first place.

I’ve had past experiences with people getting intensely attached very quickly, so I know that probably makes me more sensitive to sudden intensity. I don’t want to project that onto her. But I also found myself this morning going back through 10 days of texts, checking dates and who invited whom because I couldn’t understand what I had supposedly done.

That was when I realized I needed to be clear about my boundaries.

I thought this was a chill neighborhood friendship. Invite each other when we’re out, hang if it works, try again next time if it doesn’t. Maybe sometimes we just bump into each other and say hi.

The screenshots are our entire text history and include the boundary I sent this morning. I’m not trying to punish or reject her. I just don’t have the capacity for a brand-new friendship to already feel like something I need to manage.

AIO for being this firm after only knowing her for 10 days?
