Help planning a 7-day Thunder Bay → Jasper/Banff road trip
Hey everyone! Looking for some advice from people who know the Rockies well.
My girlfriend and I are planning a 7-day road trip from Thunder Bay, Ontario to Alberta and I'm trying to figure out the best way to spend our time.
We're comfortable with long driving days. For example, we're planning to do Thunder Bay → Edmonton on the first day, which I know is a crazy long day, but we're okay with it.
Rough plan so far:
Day 1: Thunder Bay → Edmonton
Day 2: Edmonton → Jasper
Day 3: Jasper → Banff via the Icefields Parkway
Days 4–5: Banff / Lake Louise area
Day 6: Start heading back east
Day 7: Back to Thunder Bay
The part I'm struggling with is where we should actually stay.
We're not looking to spend $1,000+ a night on a luxury hotel. I'd much rather spend ~$200–400 on somewhere that's actually beautiful and put the extra money toward the trip.
We're especially interested in:
Mountain views
Cabins/lodges surrounded by nature
Camping somewhere really beautiful under the stars
Somewhere with minimal light pollution where we can actually see the night sky
Lakes/mountains nearby
A place that's memorable rather than just a generic hotel room
I'm totally open to one or two nights camping and a couple nights in a hotel/cabin.
I'd especially love recommendations for somewhere between Jasper and Banff along the Icefields Parkway where we could camp and wake up surrounded by mountains
