How can I properly learn to ride a geared motorcycle and become confident on the road?
I’m 25 and trying to learn how to ride a motorcycle. I can ride a bicycle, but I’ve never become confident with a geared bike. There’s a Bajaj Pulsar 150 at home, and I’ve tried riding it a few times. I can start and move the bike, but I still don’t feel like I’m properly in control.
I’ll be learning with the help of my brother/friends and will initially practice in an open ground or quiet streets. My goal is not just to learn how to move the bike—I want to understand proper bike control and eventually be confident enough to ride in normal traffic.
These are the things I’m struggling with:
Clutch and accelerator coordination — the bike often stalls when I release the clutch.
Understanding how much throttle to give and when.
Smooth gear changes and knowing when to shift gears.
Maintaining balance and control at low speeds.
Taking turns — I tend to take very wide turns and struggle with tighter turns.
Braking properly and knowing how to brake in different situations.
Getting nervous when another vehicle approaches me.
Fear of losing control or dropping the bike.
Knowing what I should practice first and what I should learn later.
Experienced riders: if you were teaching someone like me from scratch, what would you make them practice, in what order? What are the common mistakes beginners make, and what “golden rules” or practical tips would you give that would genuinely help someone become a confident rider?
