Would rebuilding U.S. shipbuilding be a fair trade for America helping open North Korea?
I’m South Korean. Suppose Korea made a major commitment to rebuilding U.S. shipbuilding: investment in American yards, technology and workforce support, plus even a dedicated U.S. shipyard on Korean soil for American orders, using Korea’s shipbuilding ecosystem.
In return, the U.S. would push for a gradual opening of North Korea — not immediate reunification. The two Koreas could remain separate for decades while trade, infrastructure and investment gradually raise North Korean living standards and connect South Korea northward.
The goal: a stronger Korean economic community that remains a close U.S. ally.
Would that be a worthwhile strategic bargain for America? What would make it worthwhile — or not?
