Do we bring religion into education a little too much?

Ask GenZPakistan

Before anyone misunderstands me, I'm not against religion or religious education. I think it's important, and subjects like Islamiat and Mutala-e-Quran already exist for that purpose.

But lately I've been wondering: does religion really need to be brought into almost every educational space and activity?

For example, I'm in a Pakistan study group that is supposed to be about studying, yet religious content gets sent there too. Even during activity periods where we could learn something different or useful we often end up having an Islamiat teacher come in and give another religious lesson.

The last time I went to college, a teacher came to talk to 12th-grade students about how to pray. And honestly, I just thought... is this really the best use of that time? Learning how to pray is obviously valuable, but shouldn't we also use some of these periods to teach things that students may actually need in everyday life?

Why not have sessions about things like:

  • Respecting women and other people
  • Communication and social skills
  • Financial literacy
  • Career guidance
  • Critical thinking
  • Mental resilience and handling life problems
  • Basic practical skills that school never really teaches

Religion can absolutely have its proper place in education without needing to become the focus of every single activity.

There is a huge world outside religion too, with so much knowledge and so many skills worth learning. Especially for students about to enter university or adult life, I feel like education should prepare us for life as a whole, not just repeat lessons that already have dedicated subjects and periods.

Am I the only one who feels this way, or do you think I'm looking at it wrong?
