Is Vyvanse just an upper?

Medication & Side Effects

I’ve started Vyvanse two months ago. I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD but am having doubts.

The first few days on 30 mg I felt similar to how I felt on ‘uppers’ or recreational drugs, although it also helped many of the issues. That effect has died down and the medication is really improving my quality of life, but I’m worried that it’s just because I’m taking some sort of upper every day, rather than actually treating a symptom.

Vyvanse is significantly improving my quality of life, but I’m worried that it’s not because it’s treating my ADHD but because it’s just an upper generally. I don’t want to become dependent on something I shouldn’t need.

The problems that drove me to see the doctors were real and I was having trouble finding an explanation for them. ADHD explained many – but not all – of these problems. In particular chronic fatigue, rumination, trouble sitting still, staying engaged in conversations, general organisation and timekeeping. But I didn’t have issues with procrastination and tended towards hyperfocus rather than inability to focus. I find my work (coding) very stimulating, almost like a computer game with frequent small dopamine hits, so it’s hard to know how it would be in other circumstances. All the rhetoric about how ‘everyone has ADHD now’ makes me worry about my diagnosis.
