Breaking the show don’t tell rule and when it’s great vs when it’s cringe
I’m curious, sometimes when I’m reading I’ll come across a book that “tells” a lot but the writing is clear and reading it feels addictive. Other times, when a book “tells” too much it feels cringey and over the top. Has anyone felt the same and know why that is?
The context is - I noticed when I reviewed a recent read, one of the reasons I didn’t like the writing was bc it felt like the author was “telling” an awful lot. The next book I read, I said that the writing was “telling” a lot but it made the scenes clear and was almost like a movie playing in my head, so it was a strength.
