what exactly are we aiming

this game has an obviously unique aiming mechanic that is very difficult to get used to the first time you play, what exactly are we aiming though. the tip of the barrel, the point at which the barrel is aimed at, the base of the gun, what is it? i feel like itd be easier to get used to the aim if i knew what exactly i was controlling with my mouse
