I see a lot of travelers arrive in Ethiopia wanting to trek the Simien Mountains National Park with only a vague idea of the logistics. Let’s be completely transparent: accommodation inside the park borders is incredibly basic.

If you are expecting luxury or standard hotel comfort every night, you need to rethink your itinerary or stay outside the park. On classic trekking routes, you will be relying on rugged campsites, highly rustic huts, or basic community shelters depending on your route and local availability.

Locations like Sankaber (3,200m), Geech (3,600m), and Chennek (3,620m) offer unparalleled scenery, but the setups are raw:

Bathrooms: Expect basic pit latrines or enclosed drop-box toilets. Many trekkers opt for the bush instead because of facility conditions.

Showers: Non-existent at the primary high-altitude camps.

Electricity: Completely absent or highly restricted to small solar setups.

Temperature: Nights regularly drop below freezing (sometimes down to -5°C / 23°F).

Food: Everything relies on your master chef and what the pack mules carry in.

A highly-rated, cold-weather sleeping bag is far more important out here than a fancy camera lens.

Why the hardship is worth it

If you can handle the rustic nature of the camps, the rewards are unmatched:

Wildlife: You will literally wake up right next to massive troops of endemic Gelada baboons.

Views: Breathtaking escarpment drop-offs at Imet Gogo and Jinbar Waterfall.

Ibex Spotting: A very high chance of seeing the endangered Walia ibex right before breakfast near Chennek.

The High Peaks: Crucial wilderness staging camps like Ambiko if you attempt the summit of Ras Dashen (4,550m).

Hard Rules for Comfort & Survival

Layering is key: Do not just bring one massive jacket. Bring merino wool base layers, a fleece mid-layer, and a wind/waterproof outer shell.

Pack like there is no store: Bring your own wet wipes, biodegradable toilet paper, and a powerful headlamp.

Battery management: The intense cold drains electronics instantly. Sleep with your camera and phone batteries inside your sleeping bag to keep them warm.

Acclimatize first: Spend a night or two in Gondar or Debark before starting. Coming straight from sea level to over 3,000 meters will ruin your trek.

Connectivity: Do not rely on finding a phone signal. Tell people you will be offline.

The Alternative: Eco-Lodges

If you know your body cannot handle freezing nights without heating or proper plumbing, do not force the multi-day trek. Instead, book day trips using a local guide out of the park's sustainable lodges:
