Is it better to choose a franchise you understand or one with a stronger business model?
When choosing a franchise, I think this is a question many future business owners eventually face.
You may find a franchise in an industry you already understand. You know the customers, you have some experience, and you can picture yourself running the business.
Then there may be another opportunity in a completely different industry with a stronger business model, better systems, or better growth potential, but you have little or no experience in that field.
So, which one would you choose?
There is definitely value in choosing something familiar. Previous experience can help you understand the day-to-day challenges and may make the transition into ownership easier.
But franchising is also built around systems, training, and support. In some cases, a good franchise model may allow someone to enter an industry they know very little about, as long as they are willing to learn and the business is the right fit.
I don't think there is one perfect answer. A familiar industry doesn't automatically mean a better opportunity, and a strong business model doesn't automatically mean it will be a good fit for you.
Maybe the better approach is to look at both sides:
- Do I understand the type of work involved?
- Does the business model make sense financially and operationally?|
- Does the franchisor provide enough training and support?
- Can I see myself managing this business long term?
- Am I choosing something familiar just because it feels safer**?**
Sometimes the best opportunity may be outside your previous experience. But sometimes knowing the industry can give you an advantage that is hard to replace.
What do you think matters more: familiarity with the industry or the strength of the franchise business model?
