Researchers are reverse-engineering the human brain and rebuilding it with a mix of living cells and advanced technology. They create artificial synapses using special devices called memristors that both store and process information in the same spot, just like real brain cells do when they learn and adapt. Super-thin, flexible graphene acts as a mechanical bridge to biology that lets scientists grow or connect actual biological neurons and mini-brain organoids directly to electronic hardware, even using light to help the living networks mature. Instead of energy-hungry electrical wires, now they use photonics, which are beams of light, to carry information quickly and efficiently with almost no heat. The result is a hybrid intelligence that combines the natural adaptability and low power use of living neurons with the speed and reliability of engineered parts. The big goal is to build sustainable, brain-like systems that can slash the massive energy needs of today’s AI data centers and eventually create true bio-mechanical brains capable of advanced mind-machine connections, all inspired by how a real human brain achieves incredible complexity on just 20 watts of power
