Does anyone have more information about The Big Pepper closing?

I just read that tragic article about the Barrett families' unusual circumstances regarding their denial to turn ownership over to her children. The details are hazy to me and I'm confused why their shop had to be demolished. Does anyone have any more details or insight into this story?
