UEFA should rethink how it schedules the Champions League
Before today's draw, there's something we all need to talk about: how shitty UEFA splits the games. Last year we had some weak-ass weeks, while we'd get things like Liverpool vs Real Madrid and Bayern vs PSG on the same day. Wtf. So, I've got an idea. A concept that will never be heard. They select 15 games β 15 "Main Events" β out of the 144 games, and split those 15 into Top 7 and Bottom 8. Then they spread those games across the 15 matchdays/dates of the first 7 rounds, with each week getting one Top 7 game and one Bottom 8 game (Round 1 gets two Bottom 8 games), and then build the rest of the week's schedule around those games. They could even standardise things, like making the Top game always happen on a specific day β Tuesday or Wednesday β and selling that as a separate broadcast package. And it would still be a massive product, with or without exclusivity. I'd also move one game to an early kickoff to make it 3β6 instead of 2β7, and always put one big team there to shake things up. Also, as a rule, Round 8 would only have Pot 1 or 2 vs Pot 3 or 4, to avoid Main Events altogether. Yeah, that's my proposal.
