Can we talk about how certain online political circles are trying to co-opt Michael’s legacy?

Discussion 💬

Take They Don't Care About Us for example. If you lived back then (I didn’t but I’ve read about this) you probably know that Michael wrote it as an protest anthem against systemic oppression, police brutality, hence why the clip in Brazil.

Yet, some online spaces recently love to strip away that actual meaning. The Observer wrote a great article about this, certain groups have tried to co-opt his music and lyrics to fit some incredibly awful political narratives.

It gets even stranger when there’s online groups now trying to weaponize his image, like random praise from figures like DJT towards Michael, or push claims that try to paint Michael as antisemitic by using a random photo of him watching a world war 2 documentary or the lyrics from they don’t really care about us. Anyone familiar Michael’s actual platform knows this is bs. But I feel like it’s worth noting.
