Fomo of getting new computer in this current memory crisis
I have an HP OMEN laptop from 2020. It is a decent machine, with replaceable RAM and SSD, and it has served me well throughout old days of college and even serving me well now . I ignored the ongoing memory crisis initially, which has significantly inflated the prices of components and systems. There are speculations that this crisis could get worse in the future, with no sign of relief until 2028, optimistically.
I can't build a PC right now because I don't know whether I'll have to move to a new place in the coming years, and PC components are no longer selling at their older prices. I do know of a 2025 laptop model that is a bit pricey, but its current price is exactly the same as its cost in 2025 (but this laptop ram is soldered and unlike OMEN it only has 1 replaceable SSD slot)
I don't know whether my OMEN will last beyond 2030. Yes, the RAM and SSD are replaceable and would cost less than buying a new PC, but the CPU and GPU are not.
I don't want to feel guilty too for getting a new laptop when my old laptop is working fine and if I buy this new laptop, the old one will just sit idle but the way prices of systems are getting worsening, it is making quite difficult to hold that purchase.
Should I give into my FOMO and buy that laptop or not.
Please do not recommend a MacBook as I am not interested (I have posted this in other subreddit and they are recommending it even though macbook are out of reach with respect to price) else I would have bought it definitely in july with even at old price since I help many of my friends getting MacBook at the last moment.
