When do Softcovers tend to release?

I wanted to preorder Guiding Light, but it's only available in hardback. My friend who likes books says this is unfortunately common for new releases to be hardcover only and then softcover releases later.

It's my first time anticipating a new book release in real-time like, properly, and I really don't want to own any hardbacks at this point in time, but I want a physical copy because I'm sick of reading on screens!

Anyone here for other book releases know when abouts to expect to find the softcover in stores? (also im in the UK if that affects anything)
