🔮 Material Masterclass | Flexible vs Rigid White Ink on the O1 Omni: The Choice That Makes or Breaks Bendable Prints
White ink is the most underrated setting in UV printing. Same machine, same artwork, same height — switch only the white ink, and a print on leather or canvas goes from cracking in seconds to surviving folds untouched. Here's when it matters. 👇
🧵 The rule
Printing on flexible materials — leather, canvas, cotton, linen, denim, PU synthetic leather — and the piece will be bent, folded, crumpled, or stretched? Use flexible white ink. Rigid white ink is hard and brittle; it cracks the moment the surface flexes, and once the white base cracks, the color and varnish on top flake off with it.
Rigid white ink stays great for hard goods (wood, acrylic, metal, glass, ceramic) — just not for anything that bends.
📏 One catch: don't stack the height too high
Flexible white ink handles bending, but it doesn't fix an over-thick ink layer. Too much height = more stiffness and internal stress, so even flexible ink can crack. Set the print height to just what opacity and texture need — don't keep raising it for a "more 3D" look. (Both bend tests here used 0.3 mm.)
💡 Flexible white ink is a bit softer, so add a varnish coat on top for scratch resistance.
