Moving to Norway from Estonia EU citizen + non-EU spouse. Where do we start?
Hey everyone!
So, some context before anyone thinks we've completely lost our minds: we actually recently met some people here in Estonia who are originally from Norway, but are currently living here. Talking to them got us thinking seriously about making the jump ourselves, but honestly, we are totally clueless and have no idea where to begin.
To give you the picture: I’m Estonian (so EU/EEA), but my husband is from a country completely outside the EU/EEA/OECD. We want to move together, but we're stressing because we don't have a massive pile of savings to fall back on. To clear one thing up, we do have enough savings to get us there and comfortably survive for 4 to 5 months while we look for work, but we definitely don't have the huge amounts of independent wealth or funds that some immigration paths require. The actual plan is for us to go there and find regular jobs (neither of us is self-employed).
Since our situation is a bit of a mix, we have a bunch of questions and would love to hear from anyone who has done something similar or knows how this works:
How does the visa/residence thing actually work for us? Since I'm an EU citizen, can my husband tag along with me under EU family rules, or is it a massive nightmare with UDI?
Do I need a job lined up first? Can I just move over with him and we look for work together, or do I need to secure a job first before he's even allowed to come/stay with me?
What about the money thing? Since we only have enough savings to live on for a few months rather than massive funds, is that going to cause issues? What kind of financial requirements do they look at for an EU citizen bringing a non-EU spouse if we're relying on finding regular work?
Finding jobs: Realistically, how hard is it to land normal jobs in Norway when you're starting from scratch?
If anyone has been in a similar boat (EU + non-EU partner moving with a few months of buffer savings to work), please tell us how you survived it! Any tips, reality checks, or step-by-step pointers would be amazing. Thanks so much!
