HP Victus — Incident & Diagnostic Report

For authorized service/diagnostic centre

  1. Issues Noticed

• Sudden black-screen/system-power failures occurred while watching YouTube. The display went black and audio stopped simultaneously; recovery initially required disconnecting AC power and holding the power button.

• The first two incidents occurred approximately 4–6 minutes after starting the video workload and occurred while connected to AC power.

• Windows Event Viewer recorded Kernel-Power Event ID 41 after an incident. Supplied XML showed BugcheckCode 0, PowerButtonTimestamp 0 and WHEABootErrorCount 0.

• Windows Event Viewer also recorded NVIDIA nvlddmkm Event ID 153: '\Device\Video6' and 'Error occurred on GPUID: 100'.

• DistributedCOM Event ID 10016 and Service Control Manager Event ID 7024 (Epic Online Services) were also observed around the incident period; causal relevance is uncertain.

• After a later crash, an attempted restart briefly showed the display and mouse LED, then powered off. A subsequent boot reached the Victus logo and 'Preparing Automatic Repair', followed by a black screen with power/charging indicators still illuminated.

• After a 25-second power-button hold with the charger disconnected, the laptop booted to the Windows password screen, but then crashed again while entering the password.

• The laptop later reached the HP Startup Menu. It subsequently black-screened during the HP UEFI/System Diagnostics language-selection stage while the power light remained illuminated.

• A separate historical issue involves intermittent Bluetooth disconnections, believed to involve the MediaTek Bluetooth subsystem/driver. This is being treated as a separate issue.

  1. Diagnostic Steps Taken

  2. Performed hard power resets after the initial incidents.

  3. Checked Windows Event Viewer and collected XML for critical/error events around the incident timestamps.

  4. Identified Kernel-Power Event ID 41 and NVIDIA nvlddmkm Event ID 153 as notable events.

  5. Ran a Norton Smart Scan. No malware was detected. Norton reported outdated-driver warnings, but no driver changes were made based solely on those warnings.

  6. Kept NVIDIA driver version 592.82 unchanged during testing.

  7. Did not modify BIOS/UEFI settings and did not perform a BIOS update.

  8. With Chrome GPU acceleration enabled, performed a battery-side YouTube test lasting approximately 60 minutes without a crash.

  9. Performed AC/Best Performance testing with YouTube and ChatGPT; then progressively added Steam, additional Chrome tabs/pages (Reddit and Netflix), and Epic Games Launcher. No crash occurred during these phases.

  10. Performed a clean shutdown and reboot without changing drivers or BIOS settings.

  11. Repeated the mixed AC workload after reboot for approximately 15 minutes without reproducing the failure.

  12. Ran Cyberpunk 2077 on AC/Best Performance for approximately 30 minutes. It remained stable apart from minor stutter considered normal for the system.

  13. After the later recurrence, successfully reached the HP Startup Menu, but the machine black-screened during HP UEFI/System Diagnostics at the language-selection stage.

  14. Testing was stopped after the pre-Windows diagnostic failure to avoid further power cycling/stress. No BIOS changes, driver updates or Windows reinstallation were performed.

  15. Relevant System Information

• HP Victus; Ryzen 5 5600H; NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU; 16 GB RAM.

• NVIDIA driver observed during testing: 592.82.

• Original HP charger, approximately two years old.

• Chrome hardware/GPU acceleration enabled during testing.

• Notable NVIDIA event: nvlddmkm Event ID 153 — '\Device\Video6', 'Error occurred on GPUID: 100'.

• Notable Kernel-Power event: Event ID 41, BugcheckCode 0.

  1. Current Assessment

The fault was initially non-reproducible under prolonged controlled testing: the laptop operated successfully on battery and AC, survived progressively heavier multitasking, and ran Cyberpunk 2077 for approximately 30 minutes.

However, the later recurrence during Windows login and the subsequent black-screen failure while inside HP's pre-Windows diagnostic environment mean the issue should not be treated as merely a one-off Windows/application crash.

The nvlddmkm event is significant but does not by itself prove that the RTX 3050 is defective. Professional diagnosis should consider the GPU/VRAM, graphics driver stack, RAM, motherboard and power-delivery circuitry, embedded-controller/power-state behavior, AC adapter/power path, and other drivers.

  1. Requested Service Checks

• Run comprehensive HP hardware diagnostics, including GPU, RAM, storage, system board and power-related tests.

• Investigate the NVIDIA GPU/driver history, specifically nvlddmkm Event ID 153.

• Test the original AC adapter and laptop charging/power-delivery system for intermittent faults.

• Inspect cooling, fans, heatsink and thermal condition; clean and thermally repaste if appropriate.

• Check relevant HP firmware, chipset, graphics and device-driver updates after diagnosis.

• Investigate the separate intermittent MediaTek Bluetooth issue and verify its driver/hardware.

• Provide any HP diagnostic Failure ID or hardware-test error code found.

Important: Further testing was stopped after the failure in HP diagnostics. No BIOS modifications or driver updates were performed after that recurrence.
