Why did all of the universes get destroyed prior to secret wars?

I might have misunderstood the premise. I thought, destroying an earth would save that earth’s universes from the incursions. Then all of the universes where the black priests, map makers, black swans and namors team destroyed their earths, then shouldn’t all of those universes still exist. But at the end of new avengers there are less than two dozen remaining.
