Are dating apps any good?

Yesterday my friends forced me to download one, and then we just started swapping based mainly on appearance, but also considering other things in their profiles. It was kinda fun an all, but I kinda felt a bit bad afterwards, 1 because I was judging other, and knowing I would be judged too. 2 because I feel like a desperate move to make, I know dating is hard, but a dating app seems like rockbottom to me. And 3 because I don't know if it really works, I always had the impression that dating apps are for casual relationships, not for serious relationships, when i said to them "I don't think I will find my wife in a dating app" they looked at me like if I were crazy. Can I find a serious long-term relationship in this? Are they worth keeping?
