Weapon and sidearm sharing resources.

Why would I ever use the sidearm in this game besides when using a specific sidearm build? It shares resources with other better abilities. Already beat the game with Tiel aka easy mode and only used sidearm for fun. Am I missing something? Feels like wasted potential the gameplay being so repetitive as is.
