A 20-minute practice routine to make interview answers less rambling
If your answers tend to wander, try this before your next interview. Pick three common questions, then answer each one out loud with a two-minute limit. Record yourself on your phone. Do not restart when you stumble. The goal is to notice what actually happens under pressure.
Listen back and check three things: Did you answer the question in your first 20 seconds? Did you give one specific example? Did you explain the result? Rewrite only the weakest answer using a simple structure: context, action, result, lesson. Then record it again without reading the rewrite. This usually sounds more natural than memorizing a script.
A phone recorder and a friend work perfectly for this. If you want interactive follow-up questions, I built Aural, a voice-based mock interview tool, because prerecorded question lists did not challenge vague answers. Full disclosure, it is my project, but the practice method above works with any setup. What part of interview practice gives you the most trouble?
