My father passed away last year in August. I knew about this. What I didn’t know until last week, is that my step mother passed away in December. I found out by accident while looking something else up. My father owns a house. As far as I can tell, there is no will, no executor, for either of them. Taxes are due. I assume but haven’t confirmed that there are city expenses being accrued like water/sewer/trash. There was a lien against the property, but was dismissed by the court at the request of the lien holder (bank), which is weird to me. The deed is in my father’s name. I’m not sure if they had any other assets. The tricky part is that I have a brother. We haven’t spoken in 40 years, and I don’t have any way of getting ahold of him. I’ve tried. There isn’t any bad blood, we just have different moms and lived apart. I’ve called 3 lawyers, haven’t made it past the receptionist. The last one told me “honey you need a lawyer, but not this one. I’m about to go home for the day, and he’s on a conference call”. I’ve made a call to a 4th law office, but they haven’t returned my call yet.
