AITA for asking my ex to stop telling me that he loves me?

My ex (41M) and I (39M) broke up 4 years ago, after 7 years together. We decided to remain friends, as we saw each other as family. The transition to friendship had its challenges, but we managed.

In these 4 years, I started dating my current boyfriend. My ex tried dating again too, but lost interest and he is fine with that. Both my ex and current boyfriend have never met and feel a little uncomfortable talking about each other, so we generally avoid it.

I don't see my ex in person often, we mostly keep in touch via text, usually talking about music, life, or other everyday things. The thing is, he is very sentimental and does not hesitate to express how he feels. In these 4 years we've been only friends, he has, multiple times, declared his friendly love for me, always affirming that he doesn't mean it in any romantic capacity, so I let it slide, although we had had discussions about how we should adapt to different forms of interaction now that we are no longer lovers. And he does declare his friendly love to his other friends too, so...

Anyway, two days ago, Dolly Parton passed away, so he sent me (again) a message telling me about how he loves the song I Will Always Love You (by Dolly, because Whitney's version doesn't really move him), and that he always cries when he listens to it, and that he always cries thinking of me, because he too wishes me joy, happiness and, above all, love. And, of course, that he will always love me. He had already told me about this specific song and how he felt a few other times before.

Again, I didn't feel comfortable reading it, so I asked him, as kindly as I could, if he could stop making declarations of eternal love for me, as I don't think it is appropriate for our current situation. He got angry and disappointed, he explained again that the song (as intended by Dolly) is not romantic, it's about loving someone beyond romance, recognizing that they're part of their life and wishing them happiness. He reiterated that he has no problem with me having a new boyfriend, and that he was not thinking about us as a couple when he wrote the message. I still felt it was not appropriate and held my ground. He felt hurt and accused me of not understanding what pure love is, which struck me as another instance of the kind of emotional manipulation I was used to when we were together, always guilting me into conceding to his feelings. Now he's not talking to me. So, am I the asshole?
