People with “problematic” ships: What is your thought process?

First off, I am not here with the intention of hating on or judging anyone else. While these types of ships make me uncomfortable, I understand that enjoying them in fiction does NOT mean you condone them IRL.

I just want to understand: What is your thought process when shipping these ships? Is it a matter of, “I enjoy seeing this, but in a way where I’m projecting my trauma onto the ship, it makes me feel less alone, but I don’t enjoy it in a sense of, ‘Awww, they’re so cute together!’”? Or is it moreso a matter of “Fuck it, it’s just fictional”?
