Portage salarial vs EOR to buy a house
My wife and I have been living in France for about 6 months. She's French but isn't currently working. I'm foreign, resident in France on a visa, and have worked remotely for the same foreign company for 3+ years.
I'm now looking at formalising my employment in France. I was planning to use portage salarial, but we're also house hunting and a mortgage broker told us that French banks would require 3 years of history in portage salarial before considering my income for a mortgage.
I can alternatively ask my company to employ me in France through an Employer of Record (EOR), which would give me a normal French CDI and French payslips.
So I'm wondering if anyone has recent experience with this:
- Is the 3-year requirement for portage salarial generally true, even with a CDI en portage?
- Is an EOR CDI treated by banks like a normal French CDI, or do they apply similar 2–3 year history requirements?
- Would banks take into account that I've already worked for the same company for 3+ years before moving onto the French CDI/EOR?
We would also have a very substantial deposit (potentially 50%+), if that makes a difference.
I'd particularly appreciate experiences from anyone who has obtained a French mortgage recently while working through either portage salarial or an EOR.
