I recently saw an orthopedic specialist for hip pain. They took an x-ray and then informed me I have hip dysplasia. They also conducted a few mobility tests and said that some of my pain and discomfort could be due to a tear in my labrum, but that we wouldn’t know for sure without doing an MRI. I need to complete at least 6 weeks of PT to see if that helps before they will refer me for the MRI. They didn’t tell me the severity of my case though, and my MyChart notes don’t contain measurements. I’m wondering if anyone can give me an educated guess on the grade of my dysplasia based on my x-ray?

I’m also wondering if my symptoms more closely align with a labral tear or if this is just typical life with hip dysplasia?

Current symptoms -

I cannot lay with my legs straight without experiencing a sensation where it feels like my hip joints are hanging a bit out of their sockets. I have to sleep with legs elevated to relieve it. Also at night I often get very achey in my low back and hips, and the ache extends down the outside of my legs and calves. I often will experience pain and difficulty walking for a bit if I’ve been sitting for a long time. This pain feels deep in the front of my hip, like something is being pinched or like my bones are right on top of each other. It hurts only when I actually put weight on that particular leg (this symptom was concentrated to my left hip for the last 8-ish months, and then very recently I’ve started occasionally experiencing it in my right hip as well). My right hip will often pop several times after I stand up and start walking. I can sometimes hear it, but usually I just feel the slight pops. Most of my symptoms appear when I’m in bed at night, or after long periods of sitting. If I stay mobile, I have less symptoms.

I have gone to 1 PT appt and i didn’t feel super confident in my PT. He seemed to be a bit lost on what he could really do to help me. I’m only 30 and I’m worried that I might be looking at some difficult surgeries in the very near future.
