What if Liberia was established as a US territory instead of a private colony and how would've that impacted African politics?

1700-1900s

Been pondering this a lot and seeing how radically things could've changed if Liberia was a US territory with US bases in it. I think it would've implanted us heavily in Africa and less in Asia during the 19th century and I feel like it's implications in WW1 and WW2 would be very interesting, because it would increase our presence in the African theater of those wars. And I'm sure it'd mean America would be a lot more actively invovled in African politics. What are your guys thoughts?
