Why does my 3× XP boost have a “CLAIM” button if Duolingo activates it automatically?
I like doing five quiet minutes of Duolingo in the morning, before the rat race of the day starts.
As the screenshot shows, my earned 3× XP boost is sitting in Special Offers, with 15H LEFT and a CLAIM button.
Great — that suggests I can do my five-minute lesson now and claim my 25+ minute boost later, when I actually have time to use it.
Except I can’t.
The moment I do my first lesson, Duolingo automatically activates the 3× boost — without me pressing CLAIM.
So my choice is:
Do my 5-minute morning lesson → waste most of my earned 3× boost.
or
Don’t do my lesson → preserve the boost for later.
“Just ignore the XP” misses the point: Duolingo deliberately makes XP valuable. Wasting an earned reward creates exactly the loss aversion you’d expect.
And the solution is literally already on the screen:
Let the CLAIM button actually mean CLAIM.
Don’t automatically activate the boost when I start a lesson.
Right now it feels like two UX designers disagreed — and both implementations shipped.
