What even the hell is the sewer?

i make it through the town do my church shopping like usual remember to actually recharge the amulet.

Enter the sewer and while swimming 9 dogs in waves of 3 and a gunner guy who just destroy all my food in one go how are you even supposed to fight in this horrid level the dogs not only can bite you from the bottom of the sewer they can apparently also do so through the floor.

The game has had occasional bugs but that was some bull and im supposed to go through 5 levels of this?
