Getting a job as an extreme introvert?

Advice

Hi. So, I’m in a bit of a conundrum.

Basically, I’m an extreme introvert. I don’t really like being around people, and I don’t particularly want to get to know people. I just like my quiet little daily life, you know?

For the past eight months, I’ve been working my first real job as an independent contractor, and honestly, it went great. The entire job was online, all of our communication was through Slack messages, and I never had to get on the phone or do video calls. There wasn’t even a formal interview when I started, so somehow I managed to completely bypass that whole process.

That contract has now come to an end, though, which means I’m back to looking for work and realizing just how unusual that arrangement might have been.

The thing is, I actually really enjoy communicating through writing. I have no problem explaining things, collaborating, asking questions, etc., when I can type it out. It’s specifically speaking over the phone, in person, or on video calls that I’m extremely uncomfortable with.

And now that I’m applying for jobs again, I’ve been agonizing over this.

I have a fairly extensive computer science background and can build a wide range of things. I’m confident that I can demonstrate what I know through my work, a portfolio, GitHub projects, technical assessments, written communication, whatever. But the idea of having to sell myself to someone over the phone or sit through multiple video interviews genuinely makes me want to avoid the whole process.

I know the standard advice is, “Just practice! You’ll get more comfortable with interviews eventually!”

But… no thank you?

I understand that’s something I could work on, but I’m not particularly interested in forcing myself to become comfortable with something I strongly dislike if there are jobs or hiring processes where I can simply bypass it. I’d much rather find work that fits how I communicate than train myself to tolerate a bunch of phone calls and meetings.

So, I guess my question is: Do jobs like my previous one actually exist in any meaningful numbers?

Are there companies, types of software jobs, contract arrangements, or hiring platforms where communication is primarily asynchronous and written? And, more importantly, are there places where the hiring process itself can be done mostly through writing, portfolios, projects, or technical assessments rather than phone/video interviews?

Basically, how do I communicate that I’m capable of doing the work without having to, uh… verbally communicate that I’m capable of doing the work?
