Need prenatal vitamins with choline for my wife because I learned pregnancy depletes it so fast

:snoo_shrug: Requesting Advice

My wife's OB told her to start a prenatal 3 months before TTC. When I actually helped her check labels I realized most don’t have much choline at all.

I just found out pregnancy really ramps up demand for it. Didn't quite get it as a new dad to be. But what I learned is that the baby pulls choline across the placenta the whole time, like 24/7, as its very essential for neural formation. And because of that, it can deplete a pregnant woman's own stores even if eating eggs is on the regular diet. Also, if she's low on folate or B12, her body uses even more choline as a backup methyl donor. Methyl becomes methylfolate in this process, which is as important as choline.

But what blew my mind was the gut bacteria part. Some gut bacteria can break down choline faster before it is even absorbed. Plus things like alcohol, smoking, and some genetic factors can make it harder for a pregnant woman's liver to make its own choline too. Now I'm really concerned for my wife and the baby.

We're trying to compare prenatals based on actual amounts instead of just checking the box for choline if its a yes or no. My wife's also trying to avoid taking 6 pills a day. She said she hates it but she's taking it all for the baby. Not to mention, taking pills instead of powdered supplements is another thing she's stuck on.

Did anyone else switch because of this? How do you know if your wife's prenatal has enough choline to actually matter and what did you buy?
