AIO because I blocked my friend

i just need to vent because my head is literally spinning rn. i blocked a friend today and i’m still so mad about how he treated me.

so basically, my family is from let say "x" place and right now there are huge flood warnings over there because of heavy rain and crazy flash floods coming down from "y" place. i am genuinely stressed out. my grandma lives right in the middle of it and my other village is quite near the river.

i was trying to vent to my friend because i was scared for her and also just sad watching my culture and history get messed up by this stuff every time.

instead of being a normal friend and checking if my family was okay, he immediately started debating me?? like i said my culture is at risk and he’s out here arguing semantics about demographics vs region.

when i told him how draining it is he literally said “you guys go through this shit every year right?” like okay?? that doesn’t make it less scary?

then he started making it all about him. he randomly asked “where is my xyz?” and started telling about a book his sister got him. and when i mentioned my grandma again he literally goes “oh she’s still alive?” wtf?? then he tried to turn it into a competition about how his grandma is the “opposite” of mine.

later we were talking about other heavy stuff happening in the world like haiti and he just shrugged it off like “what can we do anyway, blame the government.”

i finally snapped and called him out. i told him he only cares about tragedies when they’re history and that he completely checks out of the present.

and this guy literally mocked me for having empathy. he said “as if you can do anything” and told me to stay in my comfort place. then he brushed off stuff happening in sudan and congo by saying “these cases happen there frequently.”

i told him at least i have basic empathy and don’t talk absolute nonsense to someone when their culture is at risk. he literally just typed “uhm.”

am i crazy for blocking him off over this or is he actually being toxic?
