Emancipation to receive any FAFSA?

Advice/Help Needed

I am a U.S. citizen. My mother lives in Mexico apart from me and I currently live with a family member and attend school in the U.S.. My family member has full custody of me while I am living and going to school in the states.

This is my first year of Uni and I’ve just been told that I am not going to receive anything from FAFSA because I am not legally emancipated from my mother.

On the FAFSA forms it asks for my mother’s SSN. My mother does not have an SSN however I am living with an aunt who is a citizen and has an SSN, however things started to get complicated on the forms since it needs my birth mothers information and I was not able to put my aunts.

While I’m in the states my aunt has full custody of me as she was given that by my mother to allow me to go to school here. My aunt has me as a dependent on her taxes and receives aid like snap and medicaid, for not only me but my siblings as well since we all live in her house together and attend school here. It’s a 5 person household and my aunt makes around 20k a year so I thought I would have been completely covered by fafsa but it turns out I don’t even qualify.

I’ve talked to the financial aid office and they basically told me and my aunt that I will not be receiving aid from the government since I have to put my parents information on the forms. The only way I can receive any kind of aid is if I emancipate myself. Me and my family don’t really want to do that let alone have the money for lawyers and fees and all the other legal trimmings necessary.

I had to take out an emergency loan just now to help cover my first semester, but it wasn’t even enough and I’m around 2k short. Is there something or someone anyone thinks I can reach out to and contact to get help on this matter, or anything else I can do to help me receive any financial assistance, if not I don’t think I can afford to go to school and will have to drop out which I don’t want to do.
