Concerta stopped working after a month of birth control
This was my first time trying out birth control (I have really bad periods). I was put on a combined pill (Yasmin) for 21 days. It came with a slew of side effects(ranging from severe depressive episodes, severe acne, to gut issues) but my obgyn told me that it was normal so I tolerated it. I couldn’t take the side effects anymore and decided to stop taking it altogether after the withdrawal period ended. It’s been a month since.
I have been on Methylphenidate (Concerta but Instant release) 20mg (twice a day) for months now and it was a more or less stable dose. During the 21-day period, I realized that my adhd meds weren’t working as they used to but I thought that it would get better over time. They stopped working after the first two weeks and then I would just feel a bit “awake” after taking it. My motivation, energy, focus got nuked.
The withdrawal week was the worst. It got a bit better after that and now it’s absolutely so much worse now. It doesn’t work AT ALL. On some days I feel a bit awake for the first 1.5 hours of taking it before I crash. Each pill (20mg Instant Release) would last me 4 hours before. Now it barely takes me to the 2.5 hour mark. I have no energy, motivation, at all. I just want to sleep all day. I sleep a LOT too these days. And I can’t focus at all while on the medication and it’s even worse without it. My room is a pigsty and I have no energy to clean it. Even on medication, my adhd symptoms have returned like it was when unmedicated but it’s worse now because I feel physically drained with zero drive at all times.
My doctor wanted me to trial a higher dosage temporarily so I tried it but it doesn’t seem do help at all. It just makes me feel a little better but the problems are still there. It would last me 7 hours before and now it’s about 4 hours if I am lucky.
I feel slightly less terrible than when I was on birth control but this is a different kind of terrible. No energy at all. I just feel tired and apathetic all the time. All this started right after birth control and its been a month since I’ve been off of it and it hasn’t improved.
At this point I am extremely worried that I developed tolerance to it and I have no idea what to do. I am falling behind and I have insane amounts of backlogs and my meds aren’t helping at all.
Has anyone faced something like this due to birth control? I don’t have the means to visit a new obgyn right now. I have no idea how to fix this and my my meds work again. I have fixed my sleep, food habits, nothing seems to help.
Any advice is appreciated!
