Has barcode inventory software made a real difference for your warehouse?

We kept trying to solve picking mistakes with more paper. A second check mark, another count sheet, somebody initialing the order before it left. It helped a little, but we were still relying on a tired person to look at a shelf and type the right number later. Barcode scanning finally removed that step. The system either recognizes the item or it doesn't. Much less room for "I thought that was the other size." We finally moved the warehouse onto barcode scans that run from phones. Labeling everything and teaching the crew took a few weeks, and people complained about the extra steps at first. The picking errors dropped quickly enough that the complaints mostly stopped.
